Everybody talks about him, there are so many debates about who he is and what he did. The greatest philosophers and historians in the world write about Him. We know that more than 2000 years ago a man named Jesus from a little town of Nazareth walked on this earth. He lived and breathed like a man, he ate, drank, slept, and wept like a man. Though born of a woman, He was perfect and blameless. He traveled around His region doing good, healing the sick, and sharing about God – his Father. He only lived on this earth for 33 years but in that time he made such an impact and gained a large following and many were baptized in his name. People listened and watched what he did, but not everybody loved him. He was falsely accused, beaten, and executed by being nailed to a cross. After three days he rose from the grave and is alive again. Who is this Jesus Christ?
“According to Wikipedia, Jesus also referred to as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity, the world’s largest religion. He was a first-century Jewish preacher and religious leader. Most Christians believe he is the incarnation of God the Son and the awaited messiah (the Christ), prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. Jesus was a Galilean Jew, who was baptized by John the Baptist and began his own ministry. His teachings were initially conserved by oral transmission and he himself was often referred to as “rabbi”. Jesus debated with fellow Jews on how to best follow God, engaged in healing, taught in parables and gathered followers. He was arrested and tried by the Jewish authorities, turned over to the Roman government, and crucified on the order of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually became the early Church.“
There is so much more to Jesus than what Wikipedia could ever fact find and write. All that we need to know about Jesus is revealed in the bible. Here is what the bible teaches us about him:
Jesus is God.
- John 1:1-4 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made. John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- Jesus is God. He was there from the beginning, He was there with God, created this world with him then came down to earth, became flesh, and dwelt among men.
- He existed with his Father before the foundation of the world – “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.(John 17:5)
- He is the Son of God – “… again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Jesus became Human.
2. Luke 1:30- 31 – “…But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. Luke 1:34-35 – “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
- Jesus was born through a virgin birth – this has never happened and will likely never happen again. This was to demonstrate the power of God and to show that Jesus was not a mere human, all the fullness of God was in his human body.(Colossians 2:9)
- He was brought up by His parents Mary and Joseph in the city of Nazareth. He was fully human and experienced everything we go through today. He was born (Luke 2:7). He grew (Luke 2:40, 52). He grew tired (John 4:6) and got thirsty (John 19:28) and hungry (Matthew 4:2). He became physically weak (Matthew 4:11; Luke 23:26). He died (Luke 23:46). And he had a real human body after his resurrection (Luke 24:39; John 20:20, 27).
Jesus could perform miracles and forgive sins.
3. Matthew 8:16 – “When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.” and Luke 5:20-24 – “When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” 21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat, and go home.”
Jesus Sacrificed His life for us.
4. Isaiah 53:5-6 – “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities. . . All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — everyone — to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” John 3:16-17 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” Romans 5:8,”But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Hebrews 10:12-14,” But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
Jesus is in Heaven now.
5. Romans 8:34 – “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Mark 16:19 – “So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.”
- After Jesus was crucified, He rose after three days and ascended to heaven. Imagine the creator of this world is sitting at the right hand of His Father interceding on our behalf.
Jesus is coming back for us.
6. Matthew 24:30 – “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”
Revelation 22:12-13 – “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg, there is so much more that I could write about Jesus. He is everlasting and eternal, he was there at the beginning and he will be there at the end. He gave up his divine privileges to become our Saviour and offer us the gift of salvation. All we need to do is look upon Him and believe in him and we shall have eternal life.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:35-40)
