It’s so easy to stand or is it? According to the dictionary to stand is a verb: “have or maintain an upright position, supported by one’s feet, be on one’s feet, be erect, be vertical.”
So this means I do not in any way lean on anything but be on my feet. How many times does God call us to stand on His word and not lean on our own understanding?
So many times we stand in judgement of those that work on Sabbath until you are the one that has to make that decision. Until recently I have never been in that “hot “seat.
As the terms for my new contract were being discussed, all I could hear was weekend, weekend, weekend. So what exactly did they mean by “you will have to work on weekends “? That includes Sabbath, doesn’t it? I asked. I would love to say that I did not play with the idea of working Sabbath, after all, it will be every second Saturday they argued but I did. This is when you realise that Saturday is actually more than a day or rather this is when I realised that Sabbath is more than JUST the weekend. When you are faced with such a decision, you now have to personalise this whole matter of Sabbath. What does it mean to me whether I work or not on the Sabbath? I guess with all God’s things you have to personalise it. Take the bible for instance; do I believe it to be the word of God? Can I live my life according to this word? Hopefully, your answer is yes and you firmly believe that ALL scripture is God-breathed and is useful for training in righteousness.
I had to confirm within days whether or not I would accept this offer, so the pressure was mounting and my legs were failing me. Literally, a day after I declined the job offer, God came through right on time like He always does. I got another job! No weekends so needleless to say I politely declined the initial contract offered to me with a weekend job and accepted the other. In that entire process, I also realised that God requires us to STAND when faced with such situations and He promises to see us through. So if you ask me today what the Sabbath means to me I’ll tell you it’s not just a day but an experience with the Ruler of The Universe and is missing out on anything else on that day worth it. Absolutely!!
In the words of Ellen White “God tests and proves us by the common occurrences of life. It is the little things which reveal the chapters of the heart.” In those common occurrences of life it is my prayer that we may be found STANDING, SIMPLY TRUSTING AND NEVER DOUBTING GOD.
