I remember the day I said ‘l do’ so vividly. For the longest time I had fantasised about how things would unfold on my wedding day. I am perfectionist by nature and as such, all things would be perfect on my wedding day. We would have our perfect day and simply stroll into the sunset to live happily ever after.
Now that I look back, I see just how naive I was.
If only life were that simple, we would have it all figured out now wouldn’t we?
From the time I got engaged, I specifically prayed that it would not rain on my wedding day. I needed perfection. I held on to the promise in John 14:14 “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” I had asked, I would receive…Or so I thought…
As children of God, we often get into a relationship with God expecting only good things to happen in our lives. We expect good things that we see with our naked carnal eye. Our naked eye often knows no better. Satisfied with the things of this world and consumed with earthly gratification, it often leads us astray. When we ask…we are expectant that God will grant that which we want because if the Lord says He will give, surely He must! What we often forget is that the Lord’s ways are not our ways. His ways are higher that our ways (Isaiah 55:9).
I woke up at around 3am on the morning of my wedding with knots in my stomach. It was still pouring!! It had started raining the previous night and it just wouldn’t stop. My stomach sank because God had not given me what I wanted on my wedding day-a perfect sunny day!! I recall my dad’s sister praying with me and almost instantaneously, I told myself I was never going to relive this day so I had to make the most of it!! God is amazing because when He truly says that He will calm the storm in you, he really does.
My wedding day was the happiest day of my life and I loved every bit of it. The pouring rain, much to my surprise actually worked in our favour. The amazing aura and the feeling of abundance brought on by the rain made it a day never to forget for sure. God saw it fit for me to have showers of rain throughout my wedding despite my request for clear skies; God was and still is in control.
Our feeble hands and carnal minds know no better. He has a plan for us, one that is quite different to what we have painted on our canvas.
In this marriage institution, I am constantly reminded that in all things, God has to be at the centre of it all. Marriage, much like my wedding day, can be filled with happiness but it will have its fair share of rain…How you perceive this rain and deal with it will be entirely up to you.
As a couple, you may find yourself grief-stricken, financially strained, dealing with unmet expectations, jobless or may be incapacitated. Instead of facing the fierce giants in your life on your own, TRUST that Jesus knows what is best for you!!
If you are waiting on God for a partner, are in a serious relationship or are married and you are right in the middle of a rainy season, remember that something good will come from your experience.
Enduring is probably the most difficult task, but Trust that you are not alone for you have a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Unfortunately, we cannot bury ourselves in the ground when the rain comes, we have to get wet. Getting wet is a lesson in itself. Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that in this world we will face trials, tribulations, distress and frustration.
So when you do face challenges in your relationship or marriage stay on your knees.
Trust that God knows what he is doing and be of good cheer.
We serve a God who has overcome the world!!
Nothing is too big for him!
When it rains even on your wedding day, through Christ we can learn to be cheerful and make lemonade with the ‘lemons’ that seem to have been thrown into our jars!!! The lemons may be bitter and unpleasant and the rain may be unkind to us but our Saviour’s ways are higher than our ways. When you experience trials of any kind, stand firm in knowing that God is pruning and training you for something bigger and better! Believe it and be expectant, good things are coming your way!
Now that you are married and you have enjoyed your wedding here, here are 7 keys to a happy marriage.

Beautiful and inspiring. The truth that God is in control is a truth that we sometimes struggle to wrap our heads around especially when we feel its contrary to what we asked for and yet in His power and mercy He knows the best and He causes all things to work together for our good.
