This past week I had a heartwarming conversation with a dear friend about God’s Timing in our lives as women, especially regarding motherhood. It got me thinking about those among us who have experienced the unique journey of struggling to conceive or have recently welcomed a long-awaited child into their arms. I thought of Sarah’s beautiful story in Genesis 21:6 where she declares, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.”
Just a little recap of the story of Sarah. She and her husband Abraham were a couple chosen by God to be the ancestors of a great nation. However, Sarah faced the challenge of infertility, being unable to conceive a child. In their longing for a child, Sarah suggested that Abraham have a child with her maidservant, Hagar. Abraham agreed, and Hagar bore a son named Ishmael.
Later, God reaffirmed His promise to Sarah, telling her that she would conceive and bear a son. Though initially doubtful due to her old age, Sarah miraculously became pregnant and gave birth to a son named Isaac. The way it all unfolded was evidence of God’s faithfulness and ability to fulfill His promises, turning Sarah’s initial infertility into a testament to His miraculous power and perfect timing.
Motherhood is a beautiful gift, but getting there can be a challenging and emotional journey. Whether you’re in the waiting season, grappling with infertility, or holding your precious one after years of longing, God’s word reminds us that He is the author of our stories, and His timing is perfect.
Tears of Waiting
I want to encourage you to read this if you are in the waiting season. The tears you are crying can be overwhelming. But I want you to know, that God sees each tear, and your pain is not unnoticed. This waiting time is a chance to lean on Him and trust His plan. I can imagine that the season of waiting for Sarah was quite an emotional journey often accompanied by tears of longing and unfulfilled desires. In the quiet moments of solitude, Sarah might have found herself wrestling with the ache of an unmet dream – the dream of becoming a mother.
As the months passed, each one might have felt like a reminder of what hadn’t happened yet. But we know now that Sarah’s waiting wasn’t without purpose. Thinking about Sarah’s tears should remind you that God sees and understands your pain when your desires seem unfulfilled. In your waiting times, God is inviting you to share your heart with Him, to find comfort and strength in His presence. Just like Sarah’s tears turned into laughter, there’s hope that, in His perfect timing, your waiting tears will transform into overwhelming joy and gratitude.
The Promise of Laughter
Imagine if someone told you that something incredible would happen to you, something so amazing that it would make you laugh with joy. That’s what happened to Sarah!
God promised Sarah and her husband Abraham that, even though they were very old and having a baby seemed impossible, they would have a son. God said, “I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” It was like God was saying, “I’ve got a wonderful surprise for you, and it’s going to make you so happy that you’ll laugh with joy.”
At first, when Sarah heard this promise, she couldn’t help but laugh quietly to herself. It seemed unbelievable! But God reminded her that nothing is too hard for Him. And true to His promise, at the right time, Sarah became a mom and named her son Isaac, which means “he laughs.”
So my encouragement for you is that even when things seem impossible or you find them hard to believe, remember that God can do amazing things that will bring immense joy and laughter into your life. God’s promises are trustworthy, his plan for your life is perfect.
Whether you are in a season of waiting or holding the precious gift of new life, remember that God’s laughter is contagious. His joy is our strength, and His love sustains us through every step of the journey. May your story, like Sarah’s, become a testimony to God’s faithfulness and a beacon of hope for others.
I am standing with you in prayer and believing with you – that in His perfect timing, He makes all things beautiful. I hope that one day you will email me and tell me how God has brought laughter into your life – like he did for Sarah!x
