“Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face…For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.” (Deuteronomy 34:10-12)
Some years back I heard somebody ask, “If you were guaranteed success, and if all things were possible, if there was enough time and money and opportunity, and if fear had no room in your mind, what would you want to do with your life?” How many people are living lives that are “less than”? I’m not talking about money or material things – I’m talking about life itself.
Meaning.
Purpose.
I am very aware of how corny I sound right now but this is real talk. I have this theory that if we all did exactly what we were born to do, we’d probably have far fewer cranky people at work every day. Unfortunately life and circumstance sometimes lead us in a direction we wouldn’t necessarily have chosen for ourselves. But let’s talk about Moses for a second. Anybody familiar with his story (starting from Exodus 2) will know that he was significantly less than excited about the task he was given to set God’s people free.
“Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’’ (Ex. 3:11)
“Who shall I say sent me?” (Ex. 3:13)
“What if they do not believe me?” (Ex. 4:1)
“Oh Lord, I have never been eloquent…I am slow of speech and tongue.” (Ex. 4:10)
By the way, the guy asking all these questions is speaking to a bush that is on fire but remains unconsumed. In fact, during this conversation God performed more miracles to prove that He was who He said He was. But Moses was still full of questions and fears and doubts.
“The LORD said to him, ‘Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and I will teach you what to say.’” (Ex. 4:11-12)
He already knows your limitations! He knows your circumstances! Where God is concerned, there is already full disclosure whether you know it or not. You know what God is calling you to do. If you don’t know, then ask Him, and then read His word to get your answer. If it seems too big for you, that’s because it probably is.
Find your encouragement in this: that timid, fearful guy who knew all the reasons why he was the worst choice for this mammoth task ended up being the greatest prophet Israel ever knew (Deut. 34:10-12). I wonder if he would have been that afraid if he knew how this story would end. Would he have hesitated and doubted so much if he knew that the word of God would say of him …“no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses.”
So I ask you now, if you were guaranteed success, and if all things were possible; if there was enough time and money and opportunity, and if fear had no room in your mind, what would you want to do with your life?
Now do it.
