Have you ever been heartbroken? Whether it was from a friend, spouse, boyfriend, sibling etc? Have you ever felt a pain so deep it felt like it was going to crush you and never go away? I’ve always wondered why we call it heartbreak or heartache. Is it because you literally feel your heart breaking, feel a pain that is not necessarily physical but it’s there and it’s deep?
Proverbs 4:23 says “Above all else, guard your heart, for it determines the course of your life.” Looking at this verse I felt like it answered why we call it heartbreak. When our heart is broken, we feel like we cannot go on. Everything seems dull, you may feel okay for a moment but before you know it you’re back thinking about the hurt and thinking of the billion ways you could have avoided it. You feel like you want to run away from your own mind but you can’t. When your heart is broken you feel like your whole life is failing, like nothing is worth it anymore, like you’ll never get out.
The bible says “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8. The devil wants you to feel like it will never end, he wants you to feel hopeless and not believe that God can heal you. He wants to devour you into depression, disbelief in God, anger, non-forgiveness and hopelessness. He uses any situation to lead us to a point where we don’t believe that God can do it. He is a liar and he will do anything to convince you.
In my experience, I learnt a few things that I hope will be helpful.
- Don’t run away from what you are going through or try and avoid it, face it, deal with it. Go to God and tell Him how you feel, tell Him how it hurts, tell Him how you feel like you can’t go on. Let it out to the one who has the power to heal. Reality is you won’t have only one conversation about this with God. You will have countless conversations with Him but with each one He does something new in you. Thomas Blackley said, “There, while prostate at His footstool, supplicating his grace, resting on his finished redemption, He healeth the broken in heart. There while in secret, solemn prayer, the soul takes hold on God in Christ Jesus, He healeth the broken in heart.” Go to the feet of Jesus and pour out your heart as many times as you need to.
- Another thing I found useful is to spend time with others, spend time and try and see the little joys of every day. I know that’s a difficult one, but nothing is impossible with God’s help. Find something to be grateful for every day and share that with another person. It opens your eyes to the other things in your life that God is doing. Have a group of people who you know are praying for you, people you can just pick up the phone and ask to pray for you and they will do it right there.
- Most importantly, get deep into the word and allow Gods word to encourage you.
Psalms 27:13-14 keeps me afloat. “Yet I am confident I will see the goodness of The Lord while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for The Lord.” This verse tells me that I should be confident that the healing of my heart will happen here; in this land of the living and that I should wait patiently and expectedly for The Lord to do this healing because HE WILL DO IT.
